Ottawa police officer Goran Beric has been found guilty following an incident on August 4, 2021.
Beric used unlawful force, exceeding his authority, when he struck detainee Derik Weiman in the head with a baton and stamped on his neck for two minutes while Weiman was on the floor.
The judge found his actions to be excessive and unnecessary, especially considering the man did not resist and was under the control of the officers.
In January 2024, Beric received a suspended sentence of 30 months probation, 200 hours of community service, and a nine-month weapons ban. He was also suspended without pay.
A disciplinary panel recently ruled that Beric must resign within seven days or be fired from the Ottawa police force.
This decision (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-police-officer-who-stepped-on-man-s-neck-ordered-fired-1.7546752) is due to the seriousness of his misconduct and the need to maintain public confidence in law enforcement.
