US President Donald Trump said on May 30 that China had “completely violated” the recent agreement to suspend tariff escalation, reached on May 12. He said the US had made a concession to Beijing to save the Chinese economy from a crisis amid factory closures and civil unrest.

“I made a quick deal to help them,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “China completely violated it. So much for being the ‘good guy’!”

Under the terms of the agreement, the parties temporarily reduced tariffs for 90 days. However, according to US Trade Representative Jamison Greer, China is dragging its feet on fulfilling its obligations, including lifting restrictions on rare earth exports.

White House Assistant Secretary Stephen Miller noted that the US had fulfilled its obligations, but China had imposed new anti-dumping duties on American plastics. “This opens the door to more retaliatory actions by the US,” he said.

Chinese authorities claim to comply with international norms, but inside the country there are statements about the readiness to "fight the United States, even if it leads to famine."

Meanwhile, US courts are considering the legality of the tariffs, but an appeal has temporarily restored their effect.

Negotiations between the countries have once again reached a dead end. US authorities hope that a personal conversation between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will help move the situation forward.
