Senators forward Drake Batherson, who had 68 points in 82 games last season, has found himself at the center of trade rumors. The team’s management, led by general manager Steve Staios, is considering options to strengthen the roster, including a trade for the 27-year-old forward.
Former NHL executive Doug MacLean said: “If you trade him, you’re going to trade him for someone who’s really valuable.” Batherson has consistently scored over 20 goals per season and remains an important part of the team.
Ottawa already showed decisiveness by trading Josh Norris for Dylan Cozens in March. Now the team is looking for a right-shot defenseman, given the injury to Nick Jensen, who reportedly underwent hip surgery and could miss the start of the season.
If Batherson is traded, the team is expecting a big payoff, similar to the recent deal between Philadelphia and Anaheim that traded Jamie Drysdale and a first-round pick for Cutter Gauthier. Staios is taking his time with coach Travis Green, who is reviewing the situation and is expected to speak to the Ottawa media on Friday before the team's charity golf tournament.
