Anthony Albanese

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has won a second term, giving the Labor Party a majority in parliament and becoming the country's first leader in two decades to win re-election.

According to the Australian Electoral Commission, Labor is set to win 81 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, with 68% of the votes counted.

Conservative leader Peter Dutton has conceded defeat and the loss of his seat, a fate similar to the recent defeat of Canadian Conservative leader Pierre Poiliev. Both defeats are attributed to the voter backlash against Donald Trump.

"We have chosen the Australian way. We don't look abroad for inspiration, we look within ourselves - in our values and in our people," Albanese told supporters in Sydney.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated him on social media, calling Australia "a close partner and a most trusted friend."

Dutton was often compared to Trump during the campaign. His party promised to "Make Australia Great Again", borrowing from MAGA rhetoric. Even in Canada and Australia, Trump's influence was a factor in the election outcome.
