The Ottawa Charge hockey players reached the PWHL playoffs for the first time in the club's history, beating the Toronto Sceptres 2-1 in overtime. The winning goal was scored by Katerina Mrazova in the third minute of overtime.
The match was held in Toronto at the Coca-Cola Coliseum arena to a full house. Despite a slow start, the Charge managed to turn the game around, withstood a powerful onslaught from their opponents in the third period and deservedly celebrated their entry into the postseason.
Ottawa's opponent in the first round will be determined on Sunday: the regular season leader Montreal Victoire will choose who to play - the Charge or Minnesota Frost. The second remaining team will get Toronto.
Head coach Carla MacLeod noted the maturity and cohesion of the team: "We knew the value of this game. We played with full dedication, without losing focus. This is a victory for a real team."
Goalie Gwyneth Phillips stopped 14 of 15 shots and was especially reliable at the end of regulation.
Experienced defenseman Jocelyne Larocque emphasized that such a tense path to the playoffs has strengthened the team: “We fought until the end, and now we are ready for any challenge.”
The PWHL playoffs begin Wednesday night in Toronto, with the second game of the first round taking place Thursday in Montreal.
