Prime Minister Mark Carney formally unveiled a new “slim and focused” cabinet of 28 ministers and 10 secretaries of state at Rideau Hall on Tuesday. Nearly two-thirds of the cabinet is new, including former Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Rebecca Alty of the Northwest Territories, and TV host Evan Solomon. New to the cabinet is Natalie Provost, an engineer and survivor of the École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, as well as former Carney adviser and Goldman Sachs CEO Tim Hodgson.
Despite the renewed focus, Carney’s team still includes veteran Trudeau-era politicians: Chrystia Freeland, Dominique LeBlanc, Mélanie Joly, François-Philippe Champagne, and Steven Guilbault are all retained. LeBlanc, a close friend of Trudeau, will become minister for U.S. trade and intergovernmental affairs.
Carney's cabinet maintains gender parity, with 14 men and 14 women. The structure of ministers and secretaries of state is reminiscent of the practice of previous premiers, but not Trudeau.
Some ministers appointed temporarily in March have been excluded from the cabinet, including Ariel Kayabaga and Ali Essasi. Former Interior Minister Bill Blair and former Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson are also not included in the cabinet.
The key challenges for the new cabinet include combating interprovincial trade barriers and relations with the United States under President Trump.
