President Donald Trump held a farewell event at the White House on Friday for Elon Musk, who ended his four-month stint as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk was named a “special government employee” after contributing more than $250 million to Trump’s campaign. Despite their close collaboration, Musk has clashed with a number of top aides. The billionaire has criticized Trump’s high tariffs, calling adviser Peter Navarro a “complete idiot.”
While Trump has thanked Musk, telling Truth Social, “He will always be with us, helping us every step of the way,” Musk has increasingly distanced himself from politics. He has expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s deficit bill, which he says runs counter to the goals of DOGE.
Musk previously claimed that DOGE could save trillions of budget dollars, but in practice the results were much more modest and raised doubts among experts.
Musk said that he plans to focus on business and curtail his political activity. According to Politico, in recent weeks he has become much less likely to appear in public.
