Prime Minister Mark Carney held a closed-door meeting with oil and gas executives in Calgary on Sunday — his first visit to the city since taking office. The main topic was partnerships and a strategy to transform Canada into an energy superpower.
More than two dozen industry leaders attended the meeting, including the heads of Tourmaline Oil, Cenovus, ATCO and Imperial Oil. Carney thanked them for their contributions to the economy and noted the importance of face-to-face dialogue on key issues.
Earlier, 38 top managers sent the prime minister a letter of congratulations and proposals: to remove emissions limits, revise the carbon tax and simplify the assessment procedure for large projects. In response, Carney recalled his campaign promises to speed up the approval of infrastructure projects and recognize regional assessments.
At the meeting, Carney said the federal government will support partnership initiatives in the energy sector. He emphasized that in the context of global instability, Canada must strengthen its position as an energy supplier.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith expressed cautious optimism, noting that Carney was more open to dialogue with the provinces than his predecessor. Carney ended the meeting by thanking everyone helping to fight the wildfires in Western Canada.
