Montreal has the second-worst air pollution in the world due to wildfires

According to the AQI global air quality index, Montreal was the second-worst city in the world on Friday, behind only Santiago, Chile. The reason is thick smoke from wildfires in the Canadian Prairies.

Toronto was also in the top three for air pollution.

Environment Canada (ECCC) has issued a special alert for the Greater Montreal area, which could be in effect until Saturday. Residents are advised to limit their time outdoors and, if possible, cancel sporting events and public gatherings.

People at particular risk include the elderly, pregnant women, infants, people with chronic illnesses, and those who work outdoors. Symptoms may include coughing, chest pain, and shortness of breath. If you feel unwell, seek immediate medical attention.

People are advised to keep windows and doors closed, use high-quality filters, or use portable air purifiers. When going outside, wear protective masks (e.g. N95) to reduce inhalation of fine particles.
