ByWard Market Makes a Comeback: Over 70K Visitors on Canada Day

On Canada Day, Ottawa’s ByWard Market welcomed 70,965 unique visitors — almost as many as LeBreton Flats. The area recorded more than 116,000 visits in just 24 hours.

“People are coming back to rediscover the soul of Ottawa,” said ByWard Director Zachary Daler.

The area has been a source of concern for crime in recent years, but that’s improving. An agreement between Ontario and Ottawa is investing $20 million in the city’s downtown to improve safety and attract tourists.

Police have a zero-tolerance policy for violations, including aggressive panhandling and alcohol-related offences.

The closure of the troubled McDonald’s on Rideau Street in 2023 was a symbol of change.

Today, the market is positioning itself as a place for everyone — not just for nightlife, but also for morning and afternoon family outings.
