Powerful thunderstorm hits Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley
A powerful thunderstorm with heavy rain and wind gusts up to 100 km/h moved through Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley on Thursday afternoon, reducing visibility on roads and forcing residents to seek shelter.
According to Environment Canada, the storm was accompanied by heavy rain, large hail and the possibility of a tornado in the Petawala and Pembroke areas. The hardest-hit areas could see damage to roofs, fences and trees.
The storm was caused by a cold front moving through the province. Forecasters warned: “This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”
Residents were advised to seek shelter immediately if the weather changes abruptly. If a sinkhole or loud noise appears, seek shelter in a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet, away from windows and outside walls. In extreme cases, lie down in a low place and protect your head from possible flying debris.
Power outages and property damage were expected. In some places, up to 50 mm of precipitation could fall.
